So, for instance, if your solar attic fan consumes 25 watts for 2 hours, its energy consumption in watt-hours would be:

But then, what if the power consumption is not known and instead we know the volt, current, and time?

If we know the voltage and current/amperage at which the appliance was working, we can simply calculate its wattage by multiplying the voltage and current.

Then when we know the wattage/power consumption, we can multiply it with the time to get the watt-hours.

So, if we have a solar refrigerator running on a 24v battery voltage for 2 hours and drawing 2 amps, its energy consumption would be:

= volt x amp x hour = 24 x 2 x 2 = 96Wh

## Why Calculate Watt Hours?

Calculating watt-hours gives you an idea of your devices’ energy usage. With this knowledge, you can estimate your total energy consumption and forecast how much you’ll spend on electricity bills.

Besides being a way to forecast your electricity bills, knowing your devices’ watt-hours can help you reduce your electricity bills. Once you calculate each device’s watt-hours, you can readily tell which devices consume more energy.

Of course, you may then replace such energy-intensive devices with energy-saving alternatives, limit their usage, or stop using them altogether.

If you are working with a power source that has a limited capacity, you have to calculate watt-hours to ensure you do not overload said source.

For instance, if you have a battery whose battery capacity is 200Wh, you must ensure that the total watt-hours of all devices connected to it does not exceed 200Wh. If it does, the devices will overwhelm the battery.

Converting watt-hours to watts is straightforward when you know how long the device/appliance ran for. All you have to do is divide the value of watt-hours by how long the device ran for (in hours).

So, if we have a solar refrigerator that consumes 200Wh of energy in 5 hours, what would be its average wattage?

= 200 ÷ 5 = 40 W

The primary difference between watts and watt-hour is that they represent different quantities. While watt-hour represents energy consumption, watt units represent power consumption.

## What Is Kilowatt-Hour?

At its simplest, kilowatt-hour is watt-hour with the metric prefix – *kilo*. It is the energy used by an appliance/device that consumes a certain amount of power (in kilowatts) for one hour.

For example, if a device consumes 1 kW for 1 hour, it would have used up 1 kWh of energy. If it uses 2 kW for 3 hours, the energy consumption would be 6 kWh.

To convert watts to kilowatt-hour:

- divide the value of watts by 1000 to convert it to kilowatts
- next, multiply the kilowatts by time (in hour)
